Quiz: This is a “Passes Received” chart of two Chelsea central midfielders from the Norwich game. Which one is Lampard and which one is Mikel?
Well, okay. This is not just a quiz; there is a bigger point to be made here. Both Lampard and Mikel received passes in just about identical areas of the pitch in di Matteo’s 4-2-3-1 system. They might take turns going forward as the other stay back, but both are simply central midfielders. So, if we can stop calling Mikel a defensive/holding midfielder when playing in a 4-2-3-1, that would great (mainly because it is more accurate!).
